Welcome to the Odyssey Village.

There is an old African proverb that reminds us that "It takes a village to raise a child" at Odyssey House we believe, "It takes a whole village to change one person's life in recovery." The Odyssey Village is a consortium of services directed towards meeting our mission of providing intervention, primary and secondary substance abuse prevention, and treatment services to the community at large, with a focus on the indigent population. Current services include two psychiatrically-oriented residential treatment programs for substance use disorders; a work force development agency, a health awareness center, transitional and supportive housing programs, outpatient services, and comprehensive case management services.

The Odyssey Method of Treatment was designed and developed by Dr. Judianne Densen-Gerber JD.MD in the late sixties. Densen-Gerber believed that substance abuse disorders were the symptom of underlying psychological dysfunction, and that drug and alcohol abuse only camouflage the addicts psycho-social spiritual pathology.

Dr. Densen-Gerber modified and enhanced the Therapeutic Community Model (TC) traditionally utilized for the treatment of mental health disorders. The Odyssey Method of Treatment is based on professionally supervised open group confrontation and peer accountability. Therefore Odyssey encourages personal growth, character development, and spiritual healing to replace drug dependency.

The Odyssey Village has evolved through our need to offer residents a comprehensive and holistic form of treatment.   The village concept recognizes addiction as a chronic problem that requires a long term relationship. The community or TC serves as a surrogate and/or extended family. It provides residents the opportunity to be adopted into a healthy family structure that may or may not be in place prior to treatment.
